Our Multi award-winning Principal, Brisbane family law specialist Jennifer Hetherington has been named as a Finalist in the prestigious Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards for 2018.

Jennifer was the overall winner for Sole Practitioner of the Year at last year’s Australian Law Awards and won again in the same category at the 2017 Women in Law Awards.  The growth of Hetherington Family Law since last year’s awards is such that she has been nominated and is a finalist for 2018 award of Family Law Partner of the Year.

Family Law Partner of the Year Finalist Jennifer Hetherington

Jennifer launched Hetherington Family Law (then Hetherington Legal) as a sole practitioner three and a half years ago, and has since then nurtured her practice and seen it grow to a team of six, with another joining soon, enabling us to service the needs of more clients and offer cost-effective options utilising the skills of all team members.

The Family Law Partner of the Year Award recognises a partner (or partner equivalent) who has navigated their client through complex relationships and emotionally charged family law situations.

Jennifer and a colleague pioneered a model of working in family law to assist couples to enter into a pre-nuptial Agreements (Binding Financial Agreements) and to remain operating businesses post-separation.

The firm’s motto is ‘Conflict is not inevitable’ so this model, built on respect and co-operation, working face to face as a team, to protect the relationship fits well with our culture.

The low conflict model has also been used with separating couples who wish to remain in business together when it is critical to reduce the potential for conflict.

The success and novelty of this model is such that she co-presented it to conferences in Boston and New York in May/June 2017.

Jennifer has also developed a great culture at Hetherington Family Law, applying a unique employment model for our team, reuniting people who have worked for her before. We have a nice mix of work/life balance and family needs are important to us all.

Our culture is about investing in your own skills to grow.  With an absence of ego, culture flourishes, team members are more open to making suggestions, knowing they will be appreciated, not castigated.
